Quick answer: a dog mate finder is an online platform that connects owners looking for a compatible breeding partner. The good ones show health information and breeding terms on every profile and let you filter by breed and location. Before you search, make sure your dog is about 2 years old, health-tested for its breed and has a stable temperament.

The basics

What Is A Dog Mate Finder?

A dog mate finder is a directory of dogs whose owners are actively looking for a breeding partner. You create a profile for your dog, search by breed and location, compare health information and stud fees, and message owners directly.

Instead of relying on word of mouth or social media posts, you search a structured list. Some platforms list only stud dogs; PetsFindly lists both males and females, so you can search from either side.

What separates a good mate finder from a classified site is one thing: verification. Can you see who the owner is, and what they've shared about their dog's health, before you make contact?

Whatever the platform, always ask to see original health certificates before you commit.

Readiness

Is My Dog Ready For A Breeding Match?

Female

Is she ready to be matched?

Her fertile window is narrow, so readiness and timing go together.

  • Around 2 years oldAnd at least two full heat cycles behind her.
  • Breed health tests doneHips, eyes, heart or DNA, depending on breed.
  • Vet check before her heatConfirms she can carry a litter safely.
  • Progesterone tests plannedStart about day 5 of heat; best mating is 48-72 hrs after ovulation.

Age to breed, by size

  • Small breeds~18 months
  • Medium breeds~2 years
  • Large breeds2+ years
  • Giant breeds2-3 years
Plan ahead

Start searching 2-3 months before her heat

That leaves time to compare dogs, check certificates, book brucellosis tests for both, sign an agreement and plan travel. Rushing is the most common reason for a poor match.

Before you agree to a mating

Health Tests Both Dogs Should Have

Ask the other owner for the same tests you've done. Check your breed's list with your vet, the OFA breed page or your breed club.

Non-negotiable

Brucellosis, both dogs

A sexually transmitted infection with no reliable cure. It can cause miscarriage and permanent sterility. Test both dogs within 30 days of mating, even if tested before.

No current test from the other owner? Walk away.
Breed-specific

Hips, elbows, eyes & heart

OFA or PennHIP evaluations, eye certification and cardiac exams, depending on the breed. Golden Retrievers, for example, need all four.

Genetics

DNA panel

Screens for inherited conditions a physical exam can't see, plus an inbreeding score to check the pairing keeps puppies genetically diverse.
